My Summer, Part I

I believe it was Benjamen Franklin that would reflect upon every day three times before he went to sleep. It was through this process that he was able to evaluate, savor and amend his life. I have had an amazing summer and wish to recap it myself, and for the few that read this blog. This is not necissarily my my favorites, rather big things in my life, and some of my favorite pictures to go along with it. This is "My life" this summer...

June and my sabbatical.
For the first time in my life, I did nothing. I left Abilene and my responsibilities for an entire month. During this time, I traveled to Houston to visit with my brother, hung out with my sisters in Arlington, went to a luau in A-town, and went to Europe. This time was so special and timely for me. It was the first time since sophomore year of high school since I had not had a job, or taken any summer school. For an entire month, I was able to rest, refocus, explore, read, laugh, and live free of the daily grind.

California, August 5-10
On July 28, 7:00am, while eating my fruit/granola/yogurt delight for breakfast, I thought that it would be a good time for me to go to California. Megan, my sister, is moving from Pasadena to Houston in October (no pressure Derek), and I figured that this could be the last time I could easily travel to California. I was also looking at a bank account with ample "Adventure Funds". So, I talk to my boss that morning, Megan, and Nick, and by lunch time, I had a ticket to Califor-ni-a.
My time in California was wonderful. I did not do a single touristy thing, unless you consider the beach touristy. I spent two days at the beach, one day in scenic Bakersfield, and the rest in Pasadina. Megan, Derek, Conor, Logan, and Noël, thank you for making my trip to California amazing.


Thanks Derek and Megan for letting me come. I cannot wait until you move to Houston.

I don't mind eating the same thing repeatedly. Egg sandwiches in the morning. Roast beef sandwiches for lunch. Bagel Bites for dinner. All have been eating phases that I have gone through. Now that we are settling into our surroundings a little more here in Orange County, we felt a little more comfortable to just take it easy on the weekends. So, we cooked. Busy, busy, busy

Memories and thoughts disappear if not stored, recorded, written, or memorialized somehow. Of course, this immediately makes me think of pre-literate societies and what it must have been like to have only a few recorded memories, thoughts, pictures, or keepsakes not yet even 50 years ago. Now, every moment of every day is recorded, synched, uploaded, stored, and searchable to myself (or others). What then is to be done? Shirk the norms? Embrace the present culture? Moderate between the two? And yet, I have digressed . . . Yesterday's trip down memory lane truly allowed me to see the types of thoughts that were retained and more importantly the frequency. What seemed regular and consistent in 2006 and early in China, understandably diminished once marrying Noël, moving back to the States, further diminishing once beginning at PCA, and almost disappearing in Long Beach, and continuing through early Yakima and teaching, until now. Snake

It will have been fifteen years ago this year that I got my first cell phone. It was a Nokia something that had interchangeable faceplates. The phone-brick called people, received calls, and had games buried deep within the OS. My favorite was a this little gem: snake. The game was occasionally played but never mastered. Well, because you always died. The snake would eat too many apples, get too long, become unwieldy, and then you would run into yourself. My score never topped 200 and it didn't even matter. Scores on games on my phone didn't matter, because it was irrelevant to life. The phone barely mattered because I would rarely use it. I had other things to worry about. About this same time, in high school I start playing console games. I can thank Mike Stork for subsidizing the purchase of my first--a N64. That summer Mike gave me to do work around his property.
